Phytostanols or plant stanols are, therefore, a type of phytosterols or plant sterols, which differ from both cholesterol and plant sterols in that they do not have a double bond. They are most commonly found in nature in the form of a stanol ester. The most abundant plant sterols are sitosterol and campesterol, while the most important plant stanols are sitosterol and campestanol. The European Union recently approved the nutritional declaration of these substances as beneficial in contributing to the maintenance of normal plasma cholesterol levels (see previous entry). The European Union requires that at least 0.8 g of plant sterols/plant stanols must be consumed daily to have an effect. However, several scientific-medical researches recommend 2 g/day or even more as I will discuss later.
They lower your blood pressure, reduce your cholesterol, improve your sports performance, help you lose weight or unblock your congested intestine. They are known as “functional foods”, manufactured by large companies such as Danone, Unilever, Pascual or Kaiku, and if you take them regularly, your health problems will subside or disappear.
And why don’t I believe the wonders of actimeles, danacoles, vitatens, proactivs, l.caseis, omega treses, activias and other inventions with futuristic names? Generally speaking, because there is little or no scientific evidence to prove their alleged virtues. As writer and activist Michael Pollan says, the claims you read on their labels or hear in their ads “are often based on incomplete data and poor research.”
The big question is how they get it right. Why are our health or food authorities incapable of forcing brands not to tell lies, or rather, not to sell half-truths or state unproven facts?
To lower cholesterol it is essential to follow a healthy lifestyle and have regular medical check-ups. The most advisable thing to do is to exercise regularly and follow a healthy diet. This should be rich in fruits and vegetables, legumes, whole grains, vegetable oil and fish. And low in foods with high cholesterol content, such as red meat, butter, lard, etc. Moreover, with Danacol you will reduce it up to an additional 10%.
It has been proven by several scientific studies that taking one Danacol a day, as part of a balanced and varied diet, reduces cholesterol between 7% and 10% in 2 to 3 weeks. That is why Danacol is the most recommended product for lowering cholesterol.

Okay. Okay. For once, and without setting a precedent, I’m going to heed your request and have decided to write about what seems to be your favorite product, “Danacol”… but only because most of you have put your foot in your mouth after reading the two posts published in Scientia about “Actimel.”
Actually this post is not dedicated exclusively to Danone’s product but to all foods (margarines, fermented milks, sauces, etc.) present in commercial surfaces and which are enriched in phytosterols and/or phytostanols such as, besides the aforementioned “Danacol”, the “Benecol” of the Kaiku company or the products of the “Flora Pro activ” range of products of the multinational Unilever.
But before I tell you what I base on to confirm their beneficial properties, we should know what phytosterols and phytostanols are, molecules that are found in the plant kingdom and that, due to their structure, develop analogous functions to the cholesterol present in the animal kingdom where it is part of the membranes of all eukaryotic cells and mycoplasma.
