Ley y Orden: Unidad de Víctimas Especiales (a menudo abreviada como Ley y Orden: SVU o simplemente SVU) es una serie de televisión de drama criminal estadounidense creada por Wolf Entertainment de Dick Wolf para la NBC. Es el primer spinoff de Ley y Orden, y está protagonizado por Mariska Hargitay en el papel de la capitana Olivia Benson, la oficial al mando de la Unidad de Víctimas Especiales en una versión ficticia del Departamento de Policía de la ciudad de Nueva York[1] Christopher Meloni fue la estrella principal de SVU en el papel del detective Elliot Stabler, hasta que abandonó la serie en 2011 tras 12 temporadas. Meloni retomó su papel de Stabler en 2021 en el spin-off de Ley y Orden, y SVU en Ley y Orden: Crimen Organizado.[2][3][4] Law & Order: Unidad de Víctimas Especiales sigue el estilo de la Ley y el Orden original en el sentido de que algunos episodios se basan libremente en crímenes reales que han recibido la atención de los medios de comunicación; se dice que estos episodios han sido «arrancados de los titulares».
La serie se estrenó el 20 de septiembre de 1999. Tras el estreno de su 21ª temporada en septiembre de 2019, la serie se convirtió en la serie de acción real estadounidense de mayor duración en la historia de la televisión[5] y en la única serie de acción real en horario de máxima audiencia que debutó en la década de 1990 y sigue produciendo nuevos episodios. Hasta el 27 de mayo de 2021, Law & Order: Unidad de Víctimas Especiales ha emitido 493 episodios originales, superando el recuento de episodios de la serie original Law & Order. On May 12, 2017, the series was renewed for a nineteenth season, which premiered on September 27, 2017.[5][6] As of December 6, 2017, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit aired 418 original episodes. On February 27, 2020, NBC announced the renewal of the series for 3 more seasons.
After the end of season 12, when Detective Elliot Stabler shoots a teenage girl who breaks into the Special Victims Squad room shooting and causing deaths, he is placed on administrative leave, and in season 13, which takes place a month later, he decides to retire from the Special Victims Unit and the Police Department. In the same episode, Amanda Rollins arrives, a young detective from the sex crimes unit in Atlanta who has been hired by Captain Cragen. In the following episode, Nick Amaro arrives, a Narcotics detective assigned to work in the SVU, Benson does not immediately adjust to the new members of the unit until later in the season.
